Dino Bichir
(Polypterus senegalus) is a hardy, primitive freshwater fish native to Africa.
Appearance: Long, slender, and snake-like with armor-like scales, distinct pectoral fins used to "walk" along the substrate, and a row of spiny dorsal fins.
Lifespan: Impressively long-lived; they can easily reach 10 to 15 years—and sometimes up to 30 years—in captivity
Tank Size: While juveniles can start in a 20-gallon tank, adults grow up to 12–14 inches and require a much larger setup, typically 100 gallons or more.
temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)
Lid Security: Bichirs are notoriously good escape artists and jumpers; a heavy, secure glass lid is mandatory
Air Breathing: They possess modified swim bladders that function like lungs, allowing them to gulp air from the surface. This helps them survive in oxygen-poor swamp waters, but means they require access to the surface to breathe.
Tank Mates: Because they are opportunistic predators, tank mates must be chosen carefully. Only keep them with robust fish that are too large to fit into their mouths. Avoid highly aggressive fin-nippers or bottom-dwellers like plecos, which may stress the bichir
