Red Empress Cichlid
Scientific Name: Protomelas taeniolatus
origin: native to Lake Malawi, Africa
Appearance:Males have blue heads and bodies with combinations of yellows, reds and oranges. Their tail fins can develop beautiful red and blue spotted coloring. 4.5 to 6 inches
Lifespan: 7-10 years
Tank Size: 55-75 gallons (longer tanks are better to manage territories)
Temperature: 74°F - 82°F pH 7.4 to 8.5
Temperament / Behavior: Mildly to semi-aggressive; territorial with conspecifics (other Red Empress males) but generally peaceful in a community setting
Tank Mates: Best kept with other mildly aggressive African cichlids of similar size (such as Haps and other Peacocks). Avoid keeping them with highly aggressive Mbuna species that might outcompete them for food, or fish that might nip at their long fins
